BOXING.

CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS. After a lapse of several years, contests for the amateur boxing championships of Canterbury were resinned last evening, at a tournament conducted in the Theatre Royal by the Christchurch Sports Club. The tourney was intended to spread over two evenings, but so many entrants withdrew that all the championships were decided last evening. 'Hie attendance of the public was not very large. - The principal officials were as follow: Referee, Mr E. Shelton; judges, Messrs C. T. Aschman and T. E. Robson; announcer, Mr F. \V. Johnston; scale stewards, Messrs W. G. Atack and J. F. Grierson; competitors' steward, Mr W. J. Moll'. The results were: — FLY-WEIGHTS. C. Pengelly (fist lib) beat G. Morris (sst 81h). Morris boxed gamely and neatly against his taller and heavier opponent, who had a longer reach, but he could not offset the winner's physical advantages. H. Walton (fist 51b) heat G. Sharman (sst lib). This was a mediocre bout. Walton did a little the better work. The final was not boxed, Pengelly having a "walk-over." BANTAM-WEIGHTS. J. Johnston (7st 1011)) beat F. Havell (7st 41b). This was the only bout among bantam-weights. It was a close contest. FEATHER-WEIGHTS. H. Keith (Bst 131b) beat L. Hegarty (Bst 111b). Keith's left band and greater punching power were too much for Hegarty. C. Chisnall (Bst 121b) beat Keith in the final, bis greater experience and skill standing to him against n willing lad. LIGHT-WEIGHTS. R. J. McAleer (flst 91b) beat E. Morris (9st 1.111b) in the only bout in this division. The first round was not attractive. In the second round, which was brighter, McAleer landed a hard swing to the jaw, which won the fight for him. WELTER-WEIGHTS. D. Fabian (10st 21b) beat J. Dwyer (10st lib). The bout was bright only in patches. In the final Fabian beat C. Ballantine (lOst 5Ub), who used plenty of ring space. MIDDLE-WEIGHTS. E. Strafforn (11st 3lh) won the title in this class, knocking out H. C. Young (lOst 91b) in the first round. HEAVY-WEIGHTS. F. Green (12st 21b) heat A. Charles (12st) in the third round, Charles giving up after being sent to the boards twice. Charles seemed short of condition. The final was won by E. Strafforn (list 31b), the middle-weight champion. He knocked out Green in the second round. Strafforn Is a promising boxer, clever and strong. _^_^________
