STANDARDISED BOOTS.

SAMPLES ON EXHIBITION.

It was announced a few days ago that a conference had been held in Christchurch between members of the Board of Trade and the local Boot Manufacturers' Association regarding the board 's scheme for the manufacture of standardised boots. As a result of the conference, several manufacturers intimated their readiness to apply for licenses for the manufacture of standardised boots. A further development of the matter is the receipt of a number of samples of standardised footwear by the Christchurch branch of the Labour Department, and which are now on view at the offices of the department in the Government Buildings, Worcester Street.

The samples include men's, women's and children's boots, in various sizes, all substantially made, mostly of chrome hide, of neat though not luxurious style. The words, "Board of Trade," are stamped on the soles of the boots; also the retail selling price of the boots, in clear figures. The prices appear to be a little lower than those generally -obtaining at present. Further samples are still to arrive, and it is understood that they will cover a wider jange of the more stylish type of boots. The purpose of showing the boots is to enable manufacturers to select those which they propose to manufacture, which they must do at the price fixed bv the Bo'ard of Trade.
