The "Herald." describing the Victorian Derby, states that Richmond Main showed the way along the river-side, the pace being moderate. The pace began to mend as they raced along the back stretch, where the field closed up, Artilleryman getting through. He rattled past the abattoirs just in advance of Surveyor, with Richmond Main a couple of lengths away. Just before the distance, Surveyor closed on the favourite and, as

they were battling, Richmond Main, with a brilliant run on the outside, silenced the opposition and won with the favourite at his girths. The "Telegraph" says Artilleryman was not always in a good position, hut ran to the front at the six furlongs post. At the distance, where Surveyor challenged and momentarily held him, he came through satisfactorily, only to be sorely pressed by Richmond Main in the next 20 yards.
