TROTTING AT ADDINGTON

THE SPECIAL MEETING. TO-MOEBOW'S rAVOUEAELE PEOSPECTS. (By Templar.) It was a happy idea indeed that induced the management of the three local trotting clubs to promote a special meeting for the benefit of the officers and crew of H.M.S. New Zealand. Sailors are proverbially fond of sport of any description, and though the hundreds who will assist at to-morrow's gathering may know more of the ways of a warship than of a side-wheeler, it is quite certain they will have the time of their lives at Addington, The managing committee, with Mr Battray's assistance, has made every preparation for the visitors' enjoyment. Both the officers and Jack Tars are to be entertained at luncheons, while a pipe band and guard- of honour will lend to the genuineness of the Admiral's welcome.

It was hoped that the track would be in such nice order as to give several horses the desired opportunity of qualifying for New Zealand Cup honours. Unfortunately the soaking it received on Monday night left it in a very heavy state for a few days. This morning it was found to have improved wonderfully, and though there i 3 little chance of its being in the wished-for "electric" order necessary for recordbreaking, it will be dry enough to enable the high-class performers to show their best paces.. Owners have lent liberal support, and as the fields include practically all the best trotters and pscers in commission it is quite certain that the visitors will take away with them a favourable impression of the sport as conducted in Canterbury. Admiral Viscount Jellicoe and party ■will arrive at 12.15 p.m., in good time to witness the first race, which is timed for 12.30 p.m. With a limit of only ssee there is bound to be a rare scramble for positions during the early stages of the Sydney Handicap. This should be all in favour of the limit division, which includes two very quick beginners in Legacy and Lochnagar. Lord Minto has not been overtaxed in the Minesweepers' Handicap, and his great turn of speed should stand to him fo* most of the journey. Even so it is quite on the cards that Colcnut and Lieutenant may outstay him over the concluding stages. More than average interest will be lent to the decision of the New Zealand Handicap, as the field includes several prospective Trotting Cup candidates. Cathedral Chimes has been set a racehorse's task in being required to concede such a speedy lot up to lOsec start, and he will have to be dressed in his very best to succeed. Admiral Wood is evidently coming back to form, as demonstrated in his efforts last month, while John Dillon can be relied on to put up a great race. Cello Sydney Wilkes, Moneymaker, and Sungod may be found wanting at the finish of what promises to be a particularly severe contest. The Ashburton representative, Emilius, has never looked better than at the present time, and he and ViceAdmiral should be capable "of keeping the others in check.

The Victory Handicap, a race eonfined to unhoppled trotters, may not produce a spectacular contest, as it is quite certain that few of the competitors will do their best without the straps. On the form she showed last month Our Girl is likely to justify her position of favourite. One of the best fields of trotters ever got together at Addington is down to contest the Queen Mary Handicap, nnd it promises to produce a rare struggle. Though none too smart a beginner, Whisht should bo in the fighting line at the finish, but he will have to make no mistakes to keep out of the way of Beta Peter, who is probably the beat trotter at present in commission. Trix Pointer has been reserved for the Queen Elizaboth Handicap, in which she will be meeting several horses that have raced earlier in the afternoon. This should favour her chance, but if Moneymaker is none the worse for his efforts in the New Zealand Handicap he will take all sorts of catching. The biggest field of the day will contest the Iron Duke Handicap, one of the fastest mile sadd'e races ever provided at Addington. Followers of the Oakhampton stable are "sweet' on Hectorata 's chance, while Capriccio will not lack friends.
