TURF TOPICS. After being closed for a week the big track at Addington was thrown open this morning and provided excellent Should there be no frost to-night it will be in rare order for to-morrow's meeting. A number of horses were exercised but few of them were asked to go fast or far. Trix Pointer, Pax, and Dillqn Direct were worked out over a mile registering a useful effort. The first-named, who had the outside running, finished particularly well. Moneymaker, looking none the worse for hL trip from Ashburton, was given half-pace exercise without the straps. Emilius, who is in great heart, got over a mile at three-quarter pace, moving with his accustomed freedom.

Lovebird and Gold Stanley were indulged in easy tasks. Lord Minto was only jogged, and Nelson Bingen, who has never looked better, was kept to half-pace work. Dillon Eddy moved attractively without the straps. Captain Stanley and Legacy were given slow work in saddle. Tickets for the Special Trotting Meeting were on sale in the city to-day, and were in groat demand. Word was received this morning that in consequence of the curtailed railway service the Ashburton Eacing Club has decided to indefinitely postpone its Spring Meeting. The New Zealand Cup candidate "Volo was seen to advantage in the TelegraphHandicap at Marton yesterday, but, as the journey was only six furlongs, it afforded little criterion as to his Cup prospects. After doing a gallop with Eleus at Invercargill on Saturday, Korke's Drift pulled up lame, and is evidently still feeling the effects of the mishap which befell him at Wingatui last autumn. It was this that led to his withdrawal from the New Zealand Cup.

The ex-Riccarton-trained Sir Fanciful showed consistent form under his big weights at the Marton meeting, but failed to get on the winning list. Sea Blue continues to improve in his jumping efforts, and yesterday gave a very fine exhibition over the big hurdles.

The Southland-owned Primum and the colt by Martian —Two Step are still at Riccarton waiting the opportunity of returning home. During his stay at headquarters the former has sobered down a lot, due mainly to his course of schooling over the small hurdles.

A Press Association message from Sydney mentions that Arch Marella has been withdrawn from the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap.

Word: is to hand from Melbourne that the New Zealand horseman, H. Gray, was not among the jockeys to be licensed at the last meeting of the A.J.C. Entries for the Geraldine R.C. spring meeting close to-morrow, and for the Kurow J.C. annual meeting on Monday. A first payment in connection with the New Zealand Cup falls due at 8 p.m. to-day. W. H. Bowdcn, trainer-owner, of Otaki, has disposed of Probity to a Wellington sportsman, who has placed her in C. Pritchard's stable at Trentham, where she will be trained in future, and probably be a contestant in the New Zealand Cup. The secretary of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association- recently wrote to Mr G. Witty, M.P., in regard to the conveyance by rail of brood mares and stallions for breeding purposes, and Mr Witty forwarded the communication to the late Minister of Bailways (Hon. W. H. Berries), who replied to the effect that the department hopes to be in a position to undertake the conveyance of such traffic as opportunity offers, provided additional haulage is not involved. Mr Herries adds that, if the coonsignors of animals will, submit their requirements to the Christ-, church Citizens' Transit Committee, the j best possible will be done with the services available to ensure transport.
