The girl, Myrtle Menneer, who was remanded at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, on a charge of vagrancy, to which she had pleaded giulty, was brought up before Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M., this morning, and committed to the Wellington Salvation Army Home for a term of two years. An aftermath of Grand National week was seen at the Magistrate's Court this morning, when a number of taxi-drivers were proceeded against by Herbert Macintosh, City Motor Inspector, for carrying more passengers than their taxis were" licensed for. There is a great temptation to taxi-drivers to overcrowd their vehicles when going to or from the races. The following were dealt with this morning:—John Shortall, Victor Smith, Edward S. Gardiner and William H. Harding were each lined 10/- and costs; and Henry G. Hunt (Mr P. P. J. Amodeo) was fined 5/- and costs. At a special meeting of members of Trinity Congregational Church, held to consider the question of church union, in accordance with a circular issued to further the cause of union in the several churches throughout the Dominion, the following resolution was carried:— "That in view of the. manifest weakness and loss occasioned to the work of the Christian Church through its divisions, we, the members of Trinity Congregational Church, strongly support the movement aiming at \mion of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational bodies, and of such other Christian bodies as may find it possible to come together upon a common basis."
