RETURNING FROM SERVICE,

PROPOSED LOCAL WELCOME. In the course of a week or so Cliristehurch eitizens'will be afforded the opportunity of ■welcoming back from active service Major-General Sir Andrew Hamilton Russell, until recently Offieer-Cominand-ing the New Zealand Division on the Continent. Major-General Russell is returning to New Zealand by the troopship Arawa, which is to make Lyttelton her first port of call, being du& there on either Monday or Tuesday week. Colouev R. A. Chaffey, V.D., C.8.E., O.C. Canterbury Military District, is moving in the matter of arranging a public reception to MajorGeneral Russell, and it is understood that the Mayor-elect (Dr. H. T. J. Thaeker, M.P.) will lend his hearty co-operation, in -the hope that the officer may be tendered a civic reception. Major-General Russell, who is a nephew of the late Sir William Russell, was farming in Hawke 's Bay when war broke out. He was a retired Imperial officer and immediately enlisted in the Main Body. With the rank of colonel he left New Zealand attached to the headquarters of the Mounted Brigade. He served with distinction through Gallipoli and, in France, when Lieut-General (appointed to command an army corps, Major-General Russell succeeded to the command of the New Zealand Division which had only just been constituted. It was during 1915 that Sir Andrew Russell received his knighthood •(K.C.M.G.), and in 1917 he was further honoured by being made a Knight Commander of the Bath.
