The fortnightly meeting of the Ly Helton Borough council was held lust night, there being present: The Mayor (Mr \V. T. Lester), Crs J. H. Collins, M. J, Miller, T. Hempstalk, G. S. Morris, 1. T. Norton, J*. G. Norton, and J. R. Webb. ' The chairman referred to the serious Alness of Cr J. T. Bricc, and It was decided to forward him a letter of sympathy, Mr J. F. Stringer, town clerk, submitted his annual report for the year ended March 31, 1919. Repayments and accrued sinking funds amounted to about £II,OOO, leaving a net liability of £82328. The electrical installation had been completed under the supervision of Mr J. R. Templin, at a total cost of about £4500. The question of electrifying the Exeter Street station was now engaging attention. •.' As this was the last annual report. that he would have the honour of submitting to the council, he took that opportunity of thanking hTs Worship the Mayor and councillors, as well as those who had held office during the eight years he had been hi Lyttelton,for their continuous courtesy and lenity. H Miller, passed a vote of thanks to Cr Hemp* stalk, who is retiring from the council, for the keen interest he had taken in the affairs of the borough during his term of office, and regret was expressed that he did not allowed himself to be renominated. SUMNER. A meeting of the Sumner Borough' Council was held last evening, there-being present— The Mayor (the Hon. J. Barr) and Crs T. Dryburgh, H. C. Jamiesbn, C. Benjamin, A, Senior, J. H. Gibbs, and T. E. Whitfield. A communication was received from the Canterbury Progress League asking the council's endorsement for the league's resolutions relative to the provision of better accommodation for both, goods and passeu- * gcrs at LyHelton and C#istcburch, and the completion of the cided to endorse the resolutions and forward them to the Governmert. The Palmcrston North Borough' Council - forwarded resolutions asking the council , to endorse requests—(a) That the Govern- - ment should control and maintain'all ar» i terial roads; (b) that all local bodies should co-operate in putting the .same hu good order.—lt was decided to support the first clause. . ..■■;'■- The Milton Borough Council's communication regarding a State-owned mercantile fleet was received. • The Christchurch Tramway Board wr-->te , in reply to the council and stated that it was prepared to put a siding at the west end of Nayland Street, the council to pay 6 per.cent, per annum on the cost of the work.—The letter was received. A letter from the Tauranga Borough. Council asking support for a resolution that the Government grant subsidies for? the establishment of Peace memorials was received. In a communication received from Sir James Alien, the Minister, stated .that he ) ,■ would consult with the Commandant of the Forces regarding the possibility of securing to Redclifl's residents a portion of thetfille range as a reserve. The council decided that, owing to the difficulty experienced by residents the borough in securing drain layers from the city, that it would undertake the work at a minimum charge of 5/-. The Finance Committee reported that the profit and loss account on the gasworks fojf the year ending March 31, 1919, showed a loss of £157 8/-. Gas. sales showed an increase of £240 2/11 upon those of the previous year. The electric department showed a profit of £ll3 3/7 for the year. The result was satisfactory. There were mow 225 consumers, 175 of whom were .connected with the first outlay, and 50 were on the Sumner extension*—The report was adopted.' It was decided that a special meeting of the council should be held on Monday May 12, for the purpose of reviewing the salaries and wages of officers and employee* of the council.
