CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The Board of Governors of Canterbury College met yesterday afternoon, there being present: Messrs H. D. Arland (chairman), C. H. Opie, H. Bovd, A. E. Flower, J. C. Adams, T. W. Adams. W. Brock, G. T. Booth, L. M. I*itt, M.P., Dr. G. M. L. Lester, and Dean Harper. It was derided to reappoint Mr E. Hassail as the representative of the Waft on the Waimate High School Board. The newly-appointed registrar (Mr I- A. Stringer) wrote accepting the appointment, and stating that he would rater on his duties on duly 1. In compliance wilh the request by the University •t" Xew Zealand, the following detailed statement of the immediate needs of the college with regard to (a) staff, (b) buildings, (c) equipment, prepared by the chairman aad deputy-chairman, be forwarded for the information of the Senate, together with a promise of more definite information as to the amount involved in the following proposal*:—(l) Establish a Chair of Education and a Chair of History. (./ To increase the salaries of the teaching staff oi the college: (a) professors, (b) lecturers, (c) establishment of research assistants. (:t) Further extension of college buildings. (4) Engineering School. (The present mnt of £209)) is not sufficient, and a further sum of £IOOO per annum is required.) Further extension of buildings are necessary. (~>) The Workers' Educational Association is in very urgent ■eel of funds. The college is at present quite unable to cope with the de ■iamb for classes and tutors, and it has no funds available for the purpose. The demand for this work is likely to increase verv much in the near future. Oh Men's' hostel building. (7) Women's hostel building. The committee recommended that the following Girls' High School exhibitions be awarded for the current year:— Deris Hale, Geraldine Box, Millicent Kennedy, Joan Olliver, Phyllis Plimmer. The exhibitions include boarding allowance. The rejiort was adopted. The Museum and Library Committeerecommended that applications for the position of director of the Christchurch School of Art be invited by advertisement in England, Australia, and Xew Zealand, and to ask Professor W. B. Lethaby and Mr A. W. Pite (principal of the Royal College of Art), together with Sir James Guthrie, to review the applications, and make a recommendation to the hoard regarding the appointment. It was further decided that the passage money of the gentleman appointed (either from England or Australia) be pai I to Christchurch. The report was adopted.
