OBITUARY.

MR GEORGE WHITCOMBE. The funeral of the late Mr George Whitcombe, who died on Sunday at the residence of his mother, Mrs E.'C. J. Stevens, Fitzgerald Avenue, took place yesterday at the Avonside Cemetery. Many friends of the deceased attended, while members of the Veterans' Club and the Canterbury Club were present. The Rev. O. Fitzgerald officiated at the graveside, and the pall-bearers were Messrs F. Brittain, T. Mansell, H. H. Pitman, T. D. Ilarman, and Morgan. Mr George Whitcombe was bom in England, and arrived in New Zealand in 1851" with his - father, receiving his education at Christ's College and Brentwood Grammar School, near London. Coming again to New Zealand, he resumed his studies at Christ's College. He later joined the Government Survey Department, doing a considerable amount of work in South Canterbury and near Pahiatua; Here he took up farming and surveying, and became a member of the Pahiatua County Council. On one occasion he stood for the Pahiatua seat in Parliament, but was defeated. In 1888 he married Miss Sedcole, of Pahiatua, who died some time ago. He had been residing at Fitzgerald Avenue for the past four years. The eldest son of the deceased is a farmer of Pahiatua. The second son was killed at Gallipoli in August, 1915, and the third son returned from Palestine a short time ago. / MR THOMAS BRTJNTON. The death occurred at his residence, 123 Canon Street, St. Albans, of Mr Thomas Brunton, at the age of 69 years. Deceased was born in Sherborne, England, and at the age of 16 was indentured to the printing trade at the Guardian Printing Office in the Strand,- London. In 1874 he came to New Zealand under engagement to the "Press" office, Christchurch, and had been continuously in its wnploy till his death. He leaves a widow, four sons, and two daughters.
