All ingenious device, which it is claimed will prove effective and profitable in raising 9*J out of every IIKI sunken ships, is to be adopted in place of existing methods. It is a combination or o gasbag ami an air pump. The "gasbag," or flexible "camel,'' can be used at any depth of water where divers can work, :uid can be passed through ports nod hutches into the holds of a vessel. It is then inflated, and will fit itself into every corner. The air in the "gasbag" displaces the water, and produces the necessary buoyancy to raise the ship.

IMPROVEMENTS ON DARTFORD. As a result of representations made to the Union Company by Mr W. T. Young, general secretary of the Seamen's Union, improvements have been made in connection with the messing accommodation for the crew of that company's barque Dartford. A spare room under the port side of the forecastle has been set, apart for the crew's mess room. Hitherto the men have had to have their meals in their sleeping quarters on the forcdeck. To add to their discomfort. Mr Young states, the men were crowded at a small table, and all their food and eating utensils, when not in use, bad to be stowed away in a spare buuk.
