CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The Board of Governors of Canterbury College met yesterday afternoon, tbere being present: Messrs If. I). Arbnd (chairman), C. H. Opie, il. Boyd, A. K. Flower, J. U. A.lams, T. W. Atoms. W. Bwk, G. t Booth, L. M. l»itt, M.P., Dr. O. M. L. Lester, and IVau Harper. Ji was decided to reappoint Mr E. Hawaii as the representative of . the Wirrl on the Waimate High School BaanL The newly-appointed registrar (Mr L. A. Stringer) wrote accepting the appointment, and staling that he would enter on his duties on July 1. The Timarn High School Board wrote asking for a conference with the Canterbury College Board concerning educational legislation. It was decided, on the motion of Mr J. C. Adams, to iftvnss the matter in committee.

The College Committee recommended that the following tutors !■«• appointed t» conduct the Workers' Educational Associationjutorial classes for the current year:—English Literature, Mr W. I>. Andrews; Economies (elementarv), Mr D. Arnott; Home Science, Mr & Tage: Economic* (Lower Riccarton). Mr J. G. I'oUou; Economics (Timarn), Mr Ken shed; History (ReddiftV), Mr E. D. Kirkpatrick. The committee also recommended that the sum of £-10 l>e voted for the porchase of hooks for the Workers' I Educational Association. In compli ■ore with the request by the University , c Xew Zealand, the following detailed ! statement of the immediate needs of the I college with regard to (a) staff, (1>) buildings, (c) equipment, prepared by : the chairman and deputy-chairman, be forwarded for the information of the Senate, together with a promise of : nore definite information as to the ■mount involved in the following proposals:—(l) Establish a Chair of Education and a Chair of History. (f) To increase the salaries of the teaching staff of the college: (a) professors, (b) lecturers, (c) establishment of research assistants. (3) Further extension of college buildings. (4) Engineering School. (The present Cnt of £2OOO is not sufficient, and a ther sum of £IOOO per annum is re quired.) Farther extension of buildings ■re necessary. (3) The Workers' Educational Association is in very urgent need of funds. The college is at present quite unable to cope with the demands for classes and tutors, and it has no funds available for the purpose. The demand for this work is likely to increase very much in the near future. (6) Men's" hostel building. (7) Women's hostel building.

The committee recommended that the following Girls' High School exhibitions be awarded for the current year: — Doris Hale, Gcraldine Box, Millieent Kennedy, Joan Olliver, Phyllis Plim■er. The exhibitions include boarding allowance. The report was adopted. The Unseam and Library Committee recommended that applications for the position of director of the Christchurch Reboot of Art be invited by advertisement in England, Australia, and New Zealand, and to ask Professor W. R. Let ha by and Mr A. W. Pite (principal of the Royal College of Art), together with Sir James Gnthrie, to review the applications, and make a recommendation to the board regarding the appointment. It was farther decided that the passage money of the gentleman appointed (either from England or Australia) be paid to Christchurch. The report was adopted.
