The office will be open from 3 to 5 and 0.30 to 8 to receive entries. The show will take place in the Art Gallery on Thursday ami Friday. A Press Association message from Invercargill states that the local lodges celebrated the centenary 'of the Independent Order of Oddfellows on Saturday evening, several hundred bein;; present. The New Zealand Executive was represented by Grand Treasurer Deans Ritchie. The Mayor, Mr Stead, spoke on behalf of the citizens and kindred societies. The function was a great success.

When replying to the toast of the "Expeditionary Force," at the annual smoke concert of the Union Rowing Club on Saturday night, Captain D. M. Robertson urged'that discipline was as necessary in sport as it was in the Army. He asked the younger members of the club to "knuckle down" to a little discipline, and said that if they did it would stand them in good stead in later life. Mr W. G. Atack endorsed Captain Robertson's statement, and said that rowing or any other sport would not progress without good discipline. Iu connection with the jubilee year, highly successful services were conducted yesterday at the Edgeware Road Methodist Sunday School. The pulpit was occupied in the morning by the Rev. W. Baumber, and in the evening by the Rev. H. A. Job. Addresses were delivered in the afternoon by the Revs. P. Knight and A. C. Lawry. A greeting was extended to the pioneer superintendent (Father Moor) and to Mr V. Peters (choirmaster), who recently returned from the front. Special music was rendered by the scholars and choir, ably assisted by an orchestra, under Mr Wm. Lucas, the jubilee services will be continued on Tuesday and Sunday next.

'' The war has done .an enormous amount of good in scattering class differences," said Mr G. H. Mason, in proposing the toast of the Expeditionary Force at the annual smoke concert of the Union Rowing Club on Saturday Light. Mr Mason added that in the past there had been a mistaken idea concerning relations of the manual labourer and the clerk, but he was glad to see that these distinctions were dying out. The men who had gone away to fight and were coming back had had the finest education possible, and the differences existing before the war -would now be cleared away. The returned men were in a position to make a better Dominion and a better world.

The number of men available for service on public works, and particularly on railway construction, has been reduced to an absolute minimum, according to a statement made by. the District Engineer of Public Works for Canterbury. The winter months are generally looked forward to by the Public Works Department as being a period in which labour should be available, but this year it has beeu found that though many soldiers have returned, the wages offered —about 12/per day—is not sufficient for men to undertake such work. It is expected that the influx of men from the country during the next few weeks may result in more applications for employment on public works generally. I BIG EEDUCTION IN TYEES.
