His Excellency the Governor-General will return to Christchurch from Dunedin to-morrow. Last evening her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool and suite attended the performance of "Oh! Boy," at the Theatre Royal. Mr Nat Woods has left on a business trip to England and America. Archdeacon Devoy came south by the Maori from Wellington last evening. Mr Hugo Friedlander arrived in Lyttelton to-day by the ferry steamer from Wellington. The Hon. Sir Walter Buchanan, M.L.C., intends leaving for the Old Country in the near future. Mr R, T. Tosswill and Mr J. C. Maddison were amongst the Maori's passengers from Wellington last evening. After 52 years' service in educational work, Mr James Milne, M.A., inspector under the Wanganui Education Board, will retire at the end of March. Mr Milne has spent 30 years in the Wanganui district. Messrs D. M. Findlay and R. A. Armstrong, president, and secretary respectively of the Moderate- League, arrived from the north this morning. They address meetings at Kaiapoi tonight, Rangiora to-morrow night, and in the Theatre Royal, Christchurch, on Sunday night. At the civil engineers' conference at Auckland the election of officers for the ensuing year resulted:—Mr W. Ferguson (Wellington), president; Messrs S. A. Mair (Hunterville), G. T.Murray (Auckland), and R. H. Sharp (Stratford), members of the council. Mr F. Basham was added to the list of vice-presidents. A very old member of the Canterbury Builders' Association (Mr H. J. Nightingale) was farewelled at a smoke concert on Monday evening, prior to taking up his residence in Auckland. He was presented by the president (Mr J. A. Scarff) with a suit-ease, to mark the esteem in which he was held by his fellow-builders. The president of the Methodist Conference has received cable advice of the death of the Rev. Frederick Rands, Methodist chaplain with the Forces at the front, on February 14, from influenza. The Rev. Frederick Rands was born at Methven 35 years ago. He entered the ministry in 1908 and was stationed at Dunedin South, Levin, Wellington South, Kaponga and Marton. He was an enthusiastic athlete and a popular preacher. In December, 1915, while at Marton, he was appointed chaplain to the camp there. Early in 1917 he was appointed chaplain at Trentham and he left New Zealand with the Forces last year. His wife is the daughter of the Rev. J. R. Clark, now of Whangarei.
