June 20, 1.25 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 19. The "New York World" says that three submarine attacks" made against one conVny of American troops:!)ips going to .France were frustrated by naval vessels. A periscope appeared amidst the troopships, and one ship loaded with tri-nitro-toluol' (the charge used in the Allies' highexplosive shells). A cruiser 600 yards away fired on the U-boat, and the Naval Guards on the troopships fired likewise, but it is not known if the U-boat Avas hit. Two hours later a U-boat appeared 50 feet from one transport and the ship laden with t.n.t. Destroyers quickly appeared and forced Hie U-boat to submerge. They dropped depth bombs, and a quantity of oil rose to the surface. A destroyer reported later that she was sure that the U-boat had been destroyed. When the convoy was in sight of land, in European waters, two U-boats appeared in their wake and bred one torpedo, which missed its mark. The destroyers and Naval Guards opened fire, but whether the submarines were hit is unknown. STARVATION RATIONS IN AUSTRIA. WHY BREAD ALLOWANCE WAS HALVED. (A. & N.Z.) (Kec.
