The Farmers' Union Conference which is sitting at Auckland passed resolutions that the Government should take all precautions to prevent the spread of cattle tick, and disapproving of the principle of the Government controlling prices except for Imperial war purpose?, say* a Press Association message. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club has extended its usual hospitality to active service members of the N.Z.F.F. for the meeting on June 3. Returned soldiers in mufti will need to apply to the C.D.C. for admission tickets on Friday. Returned soldiers and men on leave from camps in khaki will be passed at the gates. Attested men not yet concentrated are.not eligible.

At the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court this morning, before Messrs L. A. Stringer and F. Knights, J.P.'s, a first offender for' drunkenness was fined 10/and costs. Robert Johansen, a seaman, was charged with assaulting Senior-Ser-geant Jackson in the execution of his duty, and with disorderly conduct whilst drunk. On the first charge he was fined £3, in default three months' imprisonment, ami on the second 40/-, in default one month's imprisonment. Probates of the wills of the following deceased persons were granted as follows by his Honour Mr Justice Herdman in Chambers yesterday: —Honour Anderson (Mr Papprill), Geo. Sewell (Mr Papprill), Win. Henry Knowles (Mr Beattie), Nina Henrietta Gresson (Mr Brown), Geo. Brady (Mr-Hannan), William Hutt (Mr Ffitch), John Hunter Raine (Mr Rolleston). In the estate of Arthur Hall Fletcher, deceased (Mr Upham), a motion to confirm Registrar's report was grauted accordingly. .

Last evening, in St. Paul's Papanui (Anglican) schoolroom, a welcome home social was tendered by the Papanui Residents' Returned Soldiers' Reception Committee to many recently returned Papanui men. Mr R. Patrick presided, and the soldier guests were the following:—W. Procter, W. Duke, T. Veitch, R. Montgomery, B. Montgomery, J. Laing, T. Gill, T. Matson, L. Scott, E. Waller, P. Blade, B. Miin, n. Breach, C. Claridge, G. Stewart, S. ?xruse, B. Waddington, Cook, C. Wilson, T. Wilson and L. Wilson. Messrs G. Witty, M.P., L. B. Hunt and P. Jones extended the residents' welcome, and thanked the men for their services in the great cause. Papanui was glad to receive them back. Private S. Kruse, on behalf of his comrades and himself, acknowledged the welcome. Thereafter, an enjoyable evening was spent in music and dancing.

Mr C. S. Thomas presided over the fortnightly social gathering of the Canterbury Caledonian Society last evening. There was a large attendance. The president announced the election of ten new members, making 77 for the season. Towards the evening's enjoyment, songs were contributed by Misses L. Velvin, Marshall, Archibald and Riordan, and Messrs Taylor, Whitford and J. H. McLean. The Misses Velvin and Messrs Cocks and Taylor sang duets. Chapman and Mr H. McD. Vincent contributed recitations, and Misses J. McKeiizie, E. Turner, Waugh, Scott, Cuniugham, Smith, Seymour and Sinclair, dances. Mr Ward gave a cornet solo, and Mrs E. A. Smith acted as the evening's aceoinpaniste. The Pipe Band supplied national music to round off the programme which had been well arranged by Messrs D. Sinclair and R. E. Nightingale.

At meeting yesterday afternoon of the Christchurch Tramways Board, the roll for the coming board election was formally passed. At a meeting of the Woolston Fire Board which is to be held this evening, Mr J. J. Graham, who has been, chairman of the board for several years will tender his resignation.

Before Messrs P. Morrison and G. Robertsou, J.P's., at Darfield this morning, Thomas Clarke was charged with theft. He was convicted, sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment, prohibited, and ordered to pay costs. A Press Association message from Auckland states that the Farmers' Union Conference, after a lengthy debate, by 79 votes to 14 rejected a motion protesting against the issue of the war loan, free of income tax. While driving in Canon Street, St. Albans, at aboyt 4.20 p.m. yesterday, a milkman named J. Fleming collided with a trap and was thrown out of his cart. He was removed to the hospital in a semi-conscious condition, and this morning his condition had improved a little.

On Monday next, the King's Birthday, the Christchurch Telegraph Office will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to midnight. All offices in the Dominion will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., and offices usually open on Sundays and holidays will reopen in the evening. The Telephone Exchange will be open continuously.

His Honour Mr Justice HorJman this afternoon delivered his reserved decision in the undefended divorce petition of Mary Louisa Taylor (Mr M. Donnelly) v. Albert Victor Taylor, an application for a decree nisi on the grounds ol desertion. His Honour granted the decree nisi, to be made absolute in three months, and made an interim order for petitioner to have custody of the child. Costs on the lowest scale, and disbursements, were allowed against respondent.
