There is still considerable doubt ns to whether the process under which Messrs H. Hunter, E. E. Langley, and J. Hood were released after serving a portion of their sentences for sedition was such as to make Mr H. Hunter eligible for reelection to the Christchurch City Council. The men were released by King's pardon, under Eoyal warrant, signed by the Go-vernor-General. When approached by a Sun representative last evening for enlightenment as to whether the release really amounted to a "free pardon," such as would comply with the section of the Municipal Corporations Act dealing with the eligibility of persons for election as city councillors, the Hon. T. M. Wilford (Minister of Justice) declined to say. He did, however, say that a "free pardon" was not to be confused with a pardon "under Royal warrant."
