FIRE IN A CHURCH.

Prrss Association. WELLINGTON, May 28. A fire was discovered in St. Mary of the Angels Church, a picturesque old wooden structure in Bouleott Street, this evening, and soon gained such a hold that the total destruction of the building appeared for some time almost inevitable. The western portion of the church, where the steeple is situated, is gutted, but the eastern end is only damaged by smoke arid wafer. When the alarm was given Fathers Mahoney and Hall rushed into the building and saved the sacramental service and stripped the. altar, but the vestments in the sacristy were destroyed. The organ is at the eastern end of the church, and therefore is safe. The origin of the lire is a mystery. The church is insured for £l()00 in the United office.
