TO-DAY'S CASES."

Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court this morning. Drunkenness. —Four first offenders for drunkenness were fined 5/-, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Assaulting a Constable.— James Wright (Mr Cassidy) was charged with assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty, and with refusing to quit licensed premises when requested. On the first charge he was fined £5 and costs, and on the second £1 and costs. Remanded. —Thomas King, charged with the theft of a pocket-bpok containing £9, also with the theft of a hat, valued at 16/6, was remanded to appear at Tokomaru, where the alleged theft occurred, on June 6. Theft. —W. Stephenson pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing two bales of straw, valued at 4/-, the property of the New Zealand Government. Accused handed in a written statement from several business men, testifying to his good character. He was fiued £* and placed upon probation for six months. m Motoring Without a Light. —Linton C. Gardiner (Mr R. Twyneham) pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving a motor-ear by night without a light. The case was dismissed. Change of Address.— Francis Charles Porter, charged with changing his address without notifying the Government Statistician, was fined £3 and costs. Sunday Trading.— Annie Phillipson, charged with keeping her shop open for Sunday trading, was convicted and discharged. Alleged Theft.— William Alexander Moore and Margaret Moore (Mr M. Donnelly) pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing a fur coat, valued at £lO 10/-, the property of Margaret Times. After hearing the "evidence, the Magistrate, in dismissing the case, said it was an extraordinary one.
