There is still considerable doubt as to whether the process under which Messrs 11. Hunter, E. E. Langley, and J. Flood were released after serving a portion of their sentences for sedition was such as to make Mr 11. Hunter eligible for reelection to the Christclmrch City Council. The men were released by King's pardon, under Royal warrant, signed by the Go-vernor-General. When approached by a Sux representative last evening for enlightenment as to whether the release really amounted to a'"free pardon," such as would comply with the section of the Municipal Corporations Act dealing with the eligibility of persons for election as city councillors, the Hon. T. M. Wilford (Minister of Justice) declined to say. He did, however, say that a "free pardon" was not to be confused with a pardon "under Eoyal warrant."
