HOSPITAL LEVIES.
ACTION BY WAIMAIRI COUNCIL. CALLS CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES. In regard to therecent protests by local bodies against the continuous increase in the amount of hospital levies, an important step was taken by the Waimairi County Council yesterday afternoon, when the following resolution was carried:— "That the chairman convene a meeting of representatives of all the local bodies to be held at an early date to discuss the question of hospital levies." MrSharpe, the county clerk, stated to-day that the object of the conference would be to urge the Government to amend the legislation, so as to enable hospital boards to raise money by loan for capital expenditure, so that local bodies, instead of having to find the capital cost out of rates, would merely have to find interest, sinking fund, etc. He pointed out that the levy on the Waimairi County this year amounted to £2G32 against £2200 levied last year, and his council thought it time to take action. The making of the necessary arrangements was left in the hand's of the chairman (Mr S. A. Staples), and all local bodies contributing to the Hospital Board would be invited to send representatives.
