The schooner Lily, which recently arrived from Kaipara, is to be laid up on Thursday for repairs. Her deck and topsides are to be recaulked, and afterwards she will load cargo for Kaipara. The Kokiri, laden with coal, is still barbound at the West Coast, but she is expected to clear the bar shortly for I.yttclton. After having been bar-bound for a considerable period at Wanganui, the steamers Storm and Invcrcargill arrived here early this morning. The schooner Annie Hill is at present lying nt Gladstone Pier for the purpose of Laying her two masts placed In position. Shipping companies that are free from Government control, especially those whose fleets are owned and run by Japanese, are earning fabulous sums. The latest example Is given by the Osaka Shosen Kaisha, the profits of which for the six months ended December 31, alter providing £384.500 for depreciation, repair, and insurance funds, amounted to £1,831,721 on a paid-up capital Of £3,100,250. The return to shareholders ■was at the rate of 10 per cent, bv way of dividend, and at ihe rate of 40 per cent.'per annum as a bonus, together 50 per cent., as against 30 per cent, a year ago. Additional appropriations were £400,000 for licet depreciation, £150,0110 for dividend equalisation account, and £IOO,OOO for retiring allowances and bonuses to employees. The book value of the fleet was said to be about £S per ton gross, while the reserves exceed'the paid-up capital, and £3,500,000 was invested in the Business.
