ASHBURTON.

NOTES AND NEWS. From Our Own Correspondent. At a public meeting held in connection with the Ashburton branch of the W.C.T.U., at which Mrs W. T. Lill presided, it was stated by Mrs W. J. Brown that the convention had decided to raise £IOOO or more for the erection of a Y.M.C.A. hutment at the front, to be known as the "N.Z. White Ribbon Hutment." It was decided that the money still in the hands of the local members be voted to the fund, and all present were urged to secure donations. Mrs Ford, of the Rakaia Union, was welcomed. At the meeting of the Hampstead Town Board on Wednesday evening, Mr W. H. Robinson presided. A debit balance of £257 3/10 was reported. The Hospital Board forwarded a copy of their inspector's report. The petition of nine ratepayers for a lamp to be erected at the corner of Tancred and Eton Streets was referred to the Lighting Committee. The overdraft at the Union Bank of Australia 'was fixed at. £BOO. The clerk stated that £SO 9/9, half the rates collected from Netherby, had been paid, as arranged, to the Borough Council. The resignation of Mr 11. P. Evans from the board was received with regret. Accounts amounting to £l2B 7/9 were passed for payment. A very successful pipe auction sale and' concert in aid of the Y.M.C.A. was held in Mayfield on Wednesday. There was a large attendance of district msidents. The sale of a flag realised £2ll, and it was finally purchased for £SO by Mr John Brown, and presented on behalf of Mrs Brown to the school. The effort will net over £6OO for the fund. A movement, which was started by the members of the Mount Hutt Road Board, is on foot in the Ashburton County, for the abolition of the road boards, the administration of the area to be conducted by county councils. For this purpose the county would have to be divided as thought most convenient. It is claimed that such a scheme would lbe less costly than the one at present I in vogue, and would, at the same time, jmake for much greater efficiency in i local administration. The matter will ibe discussed at a meeting to be held in Methven, at which delegates from | the County Council and the road boards will attend.
