NEW CHIEF JUSTICE.
APPOINTMENT IN VICTORIA. By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. (Roc. April 5, 12.30) MELBOURNE, April 5. The Hon. W. H. Irvine, K.C., has been appointed Chief Justice of Victoria. [The Hon. William Hill Irvine, lately Attorney-General of the Commonwealth, was born in Ireland in 1858, and educated at the Royal School, Armagh, and Trinity College, Dublin. He arrived in Australia in j 1879, and after spending some time schoolteaching, was called to the Victorian Bar in | 1881. He entered the Legislative Assembly In 1894. He was Attorney-General in the | McLean Ministry from 1899 to 1900, and Leader of the Opposition from 1901 to 1902,! becoming Premier in 1902. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1900. He i is described as scholarly and erudite.]
