EDUCATION BOARD.

» TO-DAY'S MEETING. The Canterbury Education Board nipt to-dny, there being present: Messrs C. H. Opie (chairman), T. W. Adams, E. H. Andrews, W. A. Banks, H. J. Bignell, J. Grimmond, C. S. Howard, J. Jamieson, J. Maze, and A. Peverill. APPOINTMENTS. The Appointments Committee recommended the following appointments:—Glentunnel, Miss G. P. Mills, assistant mistress; Gray's Corner, Miss F. M. Hart, mistress; Grevmouth, Mrs E. F. Whitmore, assistant mistress (W.A.), and Miss E. A. Murdoch, assistant mistress; Greta (aided), Miss Spring, mistress; Huntingdon, Miss R. E. Bradley, mistress; Leithlleld, Mrs C. T. Wild, sewing mistress; Lyndon, Miss A. Arnold, mistress; Lyttelton, Mr R. B. Clarke, headmaster; Newlands, Miss B. Hurley, mistress; Otira, Miss A. J. Nicol, assistant mistress; Papanui, Mr J. H. Miss D. Strachan having withdrawn her application for appointment as assistant mistress at Buatapu, it was agreed to readvertise the position. The following applications for leave of absence owing to illness were granted:— Beckenham, Miss I. M* Buckhurst, three weeks; Gapes Valley, Miss S. J. Thompson, additional two weeks; Mahitahi, Miss A. Condon, two weeks; Ouruhia, Miss R. Walker, additional to end of term; Bichmond, Miss R. Pickering, two weeks; Te Roto,Miss A. Seymour, a month; Timaru, Mr A. J. Rawstorn, to join Expeditionary Forces; Waddington, Miss G. M. Leahy, two weeks (without salary); Wharenui, Mr R. Mounsey, assistant master, two weeks. The following resignations were received and accepted :—Carew, Miss A. P. Smith, mistress; Cust, Mr J. H. Reynolds, master; Christchurch East, Miss D. Parsonson, assistant mistress, and Miss M. Macdonald, assistant mistress; Lyttelton West, Miss E. G. Dwyer, assistant mistress; St. Albans, Mr D. Arnott, acting-assistant master; Papanui, Miss M. S. Johnston, assistant mistress; Tawai, Mr J. Rcid, master; Washdykc, Miss E. A. Parr, assistant mistress; Westbrook, Miss G. Benyon, mistress; Westerfleld, Mrs C. Burrows, assistant mistress; Waikerikikeri, Miss F. A. Fisse, mistress. A report was received from the senior inspector that cases had occurred in which teachers, both in South Canterbury and Wcstland, had adopted the books used by the old North Canterbury Board; these teachers had acted under the impression that they were justified in such a course, the inspectors having recognised all books that had been on the lists of" the old boards. —lt was agreed to ask the inspectors to advise teachers that, until the board adopts a list for the whole district, they should confine their choice to the books on the lists of the respective old boards, in accordance with the procedure laid down by the department on the amalgamation of the several boards. A letter was received from the Walmate Committee, reporting that the Walmate High School Board was willing to pay the salary of an additional assistant for the secondary department.—The board decided to approve of the proposal. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. The report of the Buildings Committee stated that a letter had been received from the department intimating that a grant of £IOO had been made towards the cost of repairs and alterations at the Blackball and Cobden Schools. The District Health Officer reported that he could not approve of the installation of a septic tank at New Brighton. The school committee had been informed accordingly. The District Health Officer also reported on the condition of the teacher's residence at Sprcydon, and recommended certain repairs and alterations.—lt was decided to supply the school committee with a copy of the report and request the architect to carry out the necessary repairs. A deputation from Spreydon consisting of Messrs Inglis and Winsor had waited upon the board, asking for the erection of two additional classrooms and the removal of the temporary building at present in use. —It was recommended that the architect have the temporary building improved to provide accommodation in the meantime, and that the inspector be asked to further consider the question when the new assistant is appointed.—The report was adopted. The Finance Committee's report stated that the finances of committees were generally in a healthy state. Accounts amounting to £1037 8/11 were passed for payment. —The report was adopted. The Manual and Technical Committee reported that Mr De Ment. assistant Instructor in woodwork at the Normal centre, had resigned, and Mr Hubert Boy Saunders had been appointed to the position. The chairman of the board, the chief inspector, and the architect were appointed to go into the matter of providing accommodation for taking home science at the Christchurch West District High School.—The repoit was adopted. MISCF.LLANEOI'S. It was reported that Miss Margaret Johnston, who had won the Gammack Scholarship, did not wish to accept, and it was decided to oiler it to the next in order of merit, Miss Hilda M. F. Valentine. The following representatives on High School Boards were reappointed:—Akaroa, Mr W. K. Virtue; Ashburton, Messrs J. Tucker and \Y. B. Denshire; Hokitika, Mill. L. Michel; Hanglora, Mr H. Boyd; Walmate, Mr G. J. A. Shackleton. The master at Springburn reported that a Mrs Campbell had donated £3O for the purpose of awarding, each year, four special prizes for diligence. The committee asked the board to act as trustees and invest the money.—lt was decided to comply with the request and Invest the money in the War Loan. ,^^_______^_
