THE COAL STRIKE.
SETTLEMENT PREDICTED. Prt*t Auoeialien. GREYMOUTH, April 5. Speaking of the conference af Paparoa yesterday Mr R. Semple paid a tribute to the work of the Conciliation Commission. The miners candidly approved of the Commissioner's suggestion for a settlement. Mr Semple admitted that there was no legal victimisation, but said there was victimisation in the true sense. A principle was at stake. A man was the keeper of his own body. When a miner went home because he was sick, the mine manager wished to usurp the doctor's dutv and say that the miner was not ill. The mine officials admit that there is no complaint against the miner, who was previously a good workman and obeyed orders promptly. Mr Semple says that a State Mine settlement is at hand. A meeting will be held to-day.
