WOOLSTON’S INDUSTRIES.

THE EFFLUENT QUESTION. CHARGES AGAINST GLUE COMPANY. A case which was of interest in connection with the industries of Woolston was heard in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when the Christchurch Drainage Board (Mr 0. T. J. Alpers) proceeded against the New Zealand Glue Company (Mr A. F. Wright), charging the company with making a drain into the Heathcote River without the consent of the board, and with causing foul liquid, the washings from their factory, to flow into the Heathcote River. Mr Alpers read extracts from the Drainage Board’s by-law, which stated that no person shall, without the consent of the board, cause unwholesome effluents to flow into any natural watercourse in the district, and also that no person shall make any drain into any natural watercourse. The "Woolston residents had approached the board and asked it to deal with the effluents which were being discharged into the river by the various industries of the district, and a conference had been held, at which all the industries, with the exception of the New Zealand Glue Company, were represented. An agreement had been come to by the other industries, which were experimenting with a scheme devised by Mr Cyrus Williams. On February 14 the Drainage Board had given notice to the Glue Company to disconnect from the river. The company had then taken up a hostile attitude.
