NECK AND NECK.

THE INTER-ISLAND CONTEST. SOUTH STILL IN THE LEAD. Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 15. At 1 o’clock to-day returns showing the progress of the Red Triangle Day Fund were posted on the board, which is now being watched by hundreds of passers-by, who appear to be almost as much interested in the results as in an election return. The North and South Islands are still running a neck and neck race for the biggest total. Wellington province is straining every nerve to pull down the lead of £3300 which the South Island still has over the North. It also hopes, by beating the Auckland province total of £50,000 last year (which is at present the world’s record for a province of less than a quarter of a million of people) to regain for Wellington the firide of place which rightfully beongs to her as the capital city of the Dominion. I strongly urge every citizen to support the two greatest organisations which work for the welfare of our soldiers —viz., the Red Cross, which does so much to ameliorate the condition of the sick and wounded, and the Y.M.C.A., which promotes moral welfare and improves the physiological condition of the men in the war.”
