NEWS IN BRIEF.

After hearing more evidence in the adjourned civil ease, Harry Jackson (Mr J. J. Dougall) v. William Steele (Mr F. W. Johnston), a claim for £155 3/7, as the result of a motor accident at the corner of Fendalton and Glandovey roads, the case was further adjourned until Friday next. An attack was made on the application of the amusement tax to musical societies and kindred bodies by Mr J. A. Flesher at last night’s annual meeting of the Christchurch Musical Society. In view of the tremendous surplus the Minister of Finance had been able to declare, Mr Flesher thought that such bodies should be exempt from the tax, as their object was to uplift and' not demoralise. One of the Sydenham Supply Stores’ motor delivery wagons came into collision with an electric tram car on the Opawa Eoad about 5.30 p.ra. yesterday. The wagon was coming out of Church Street, and encountered the car at the corner, where the tram line runs close to the path. One of the front wheels of the wagon was smashed, the cover over the engine was crumpled up, and the engine itself was put out of action. The driver of the wagon had a fortunate escape from injury. A soldier named Arthur Cleave, who enlisted from Gisborne, is at present in a training hospital at Southampton, England, learning typing and other useful arts connected with a commercial career. He was badly wounded in the Somme battle, losing a leg as a result of one of his most severe injuries. Before leaving Now Zealand he appointed Mr O. G. Cox, then of Gisborne but now Christchurch manager of the D.1.C., as his attorney, as he had no relatives in this country. On Monday last Mr Cox received a cablegram from Cleave, asking that the sum of £2O be remitted to him. To his surprise, Mr Cox found that the cablegram had been put in in England on January 26, so that it had taken just over six weeks to reach its destination. Though soldiers’ messages are taken at a cheaper rate, and arc subject to delay, the delay in this case seems excessive. Indian and Side-ear, good as new, £59; 3J h.p. T.T.
