MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

TO-DAY’S CASES. Messrs R. B. Walker and H. T. Rosendale presided at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Drunkenness. —\ first offender for drunkenness was fined 5/-. Second-hand Dealer’s Act.—John Snell (Mr M. Donnelly) was charged that, being a second-hand dealer, he purchased goods from persons under age. The case was adjourned until Friday. (Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) Arrears of Maintenance.—Peter James Hogan was charged with being £9 9/- in arrears on a maintenance order requiring him to pay 7/6 a week. He was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended provided he continues payments under the order. Noxious Weeds.—Mrs E. McClatchie (Mr Kincaid) was charged with failing to destroy noxious weeds. Mr Kincaid said that the weeds had now been cleared. A line of 10/- and costs was imposed. The Inspection of Machinery Act.—F. W. Jones (the International Harvester Co., Ltd.), for whom Mr A. F. Wright appeared, was charged with using machinery, an electric lift, without having a license required under the Inspection of Machinery Act. Mr Wright said that it was a very trivial case. A fine of 20/- and costs was imposed. [Proceeding.] LYTTELTON. Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Court at Lyttelton this morning.

Prohibition Orders.—For breaches of their prohibition orders the following were dealt with:—Henry Bamford, two breaches, fined 10/- on each charge; Henry Brookcr, two breaches, was convicted and discharged on the first breach and fined 20/- on the second; William' Graham, fined 40/- and costs; Paul Tan, a Native, 10/- and costs; Thomas Grenfell, 10/- and costs; Kenneth Schenkel, who had a long record, £3; and Ratena Wahni, 10/- and 11/- costs. Breach of War Regulations.—Arthur Crosby, chief engineer of the s.s. Storm, was charged with permitting an unlicensed alien, John Kesier, to be employed on the vessel. Captain Monroe, who appeared for Crosby, who is at present at sea, admitted the offence, but said that Crosby unknowingly took Hosier on, as he had a permit to work on the Monowai. The Magistrate inflicted a fine of £2 and costs. An Aggravated Assault.—William Donoghuc was charged with drunkenness and with committing an aggravated assualt on a female. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Senior-Sergeant Jackson said that Donoghuc had gone home the worse for liquor, and assaulted the woman with whom he was living. He was convicted and discharged on the first charge and fined the amount of money in his possession when arrested, £G 0/-.
