SUPPLY OF SHIPS.
A GLOOMY OUTLOOK. [Special to The Son.J WELLINGTON, March 12. The shipping outlook is sli»! gloomy. There may be an improvement presently, but at the moment it appears that there is going to be serious difficulty in moving produce, particularly butter and cl ccse, during the months to come. The Government of the United States is ir.aki ing vigorous efforts to provide increased quantities of foodstuffs for export to Great Britain and France. A ship can take several cargoes I across the Atlantic in the time that I would he occupied by one voyage to i New Zealand and back. These are facts that are of direct interest to this country, since the British Food Controller has indicated plainly that the necessities of the United Kingdom must override sentiment He prefers three cargoes of American foodstuffs to one cargo of New Zealand foodstuffs.
