UNITED CLUB'S CARNIVAL.
TENNIS, CEOQUET, AND BOWLING. A very successful carnival of lawn < tennis, croquet, and bowling was held i by the United Club on its lawns on Saturday. The lawns were iu excel- i lent order, the entries, especially in the j tennis section, were numerous,. and the play was interesting. The carnival was promoted in the interests of the Lady j Liverpool Trench Comforts Fund. Two'j artistically-designed iced cakes, presented by the Countess of Liverpool,'; were raffled—one was won by Mrs Menzies and the other by Mrs F. M. Brown I —and these raffles, and. the proceeds of I afternoon tea, dispensed by lady\ members of the club, helped to swell the receipts. The Governor-General and | the Countess of Liverpool were present.
In the lawn tenuis section there were so many entries that the competitions could not be finished on Saturday. They are to be continued during the week. -In a semi-final of the ladies' doubles, Misses-Robson and Clark beat Misses Bowman ami Thompson, .'lO-27. Borrows and Lanrenson beat McCarthy and Goodman, 30-28, in a semi-final of the men's doubles. The combined doubles competition has advanced as far as the fifth round. On the bowling green a number of friendly rink games were played. A croquet doubles competition was won by ill's Madden and Good (Opawa), who, with a handicap of 8, returned a gross score of 54. Mrs Midgley and Mrs Good (Linwood), handicap 7. returned a gross score of 52, and got second place. Amongst those present were: The Mayor (Mr H. Scott (Eangiora), Mr and Mrs Henry Cotterill, Mr Guv Cotterill, Miss Betty Cotterill, Mr and Mrs B. B. Wood, Miss May Jones (Wellington), Miss M. Bain, Misses Allan!. Banks, Goodman, B. Ogilvie, Snow (2),' Beresford, Stella Murray, Hope Wood. Ella Helmore, Bull, Harper, Ponder, L. Bean, Miles (Wellington*, C. Lanier (Auckland), Mr and Mrs 11. D. van Asidi (Bangiora), Mis Hugh Elisor (Rakahuri), Miss Nora Bennett. Mr and Mis A. Murray, Miss Greta Murray, Mrs Henry Wood, Mrs Edgar Stead, Mr and .Mrs Brown, Miss iloovhov.se (Adelaide), and Miss Swindon (Adelaide).
