Wellington Racing Notes

Special to The Sun Visitors to the Poverty Bay meeting have a good word for Vandubhe, who. is in the Linwood Handicap at Riccarton. She is one of the useful Multi/id tribe who keep on bobbing up as winners in the Gisborne district. She is trained by Alßert Jackson, who just failed to win a New Zealand Cup with Roosevelt.

Rude, who won on his only previous appearance at Marton, is likely to show up well in the Spring Plate at Riccarton. The four youngsters Mr \V. Duncan purchased in Sydney as yearlings have all won this season as three-year-olds.

From Foxton your correspondent is advised .that Want's work before leaving home was good enough to make his • owner and trainer give him.a chance second to none in the Spring Hurdles. Want is a Cup winner and a half-brother to Midnight Star.

S. R. Bagby, the successful Opaki apprentice, was to have ridden Rose Pink in the New Zealand Cup. The withdrawal of the local horse left him free to sign on for Paraoa. Bagby won the Masterton Cup on Midnight Star.

The North Island is not nearly so well represented in the hurdle races at Riccarton as usual. Portland Lady does not stay, and Want will probably be found the best of the lot from this side of the Strait. Crib will have to be at his best to concede him just on three stone.

On her Trentham form, Impediment would have been hard to beat in the Spring Plate at Riccarton had she been entered. In tackling Estland in the Derby her owner may not be showing good judgment.

J. ■H. Prosser has taken Zia down for the two-year-old handicap on the second day at Riccarton. Since she raced at Trentham the half sister to Pavlova has trained on well. >

Mr W. R. Kemball, in whose colours Snub and Nanna will race at Riccarton, is;a recent addition to the ranks of Wairarapa owners. A few months back he purchased Multaine, who has not yet reproduced her autumn form. * * *

A meeting between Desert Gold and Biplane in the Waterloo Plate

WELLINGTON, November 2. over a mile course at the Wellington Summer Meeting is being looked forward to.

If Biplane wins the Victoria Derby this afternoon it will be the first occasion that a New Zealandowned horse has won the event. B. Deeley writes hopefully. He is returning to Auckland as soon as the meeting is over. Biplane is returning for the Great Northern Derby.

Comment has been sent South to contest the Riccarton Welter. So far she has not raced over longer journeys than six furlongs. Her dam, Wailethe, was a good performer over middle distances, and Comment will probably get a mile.

Although Rose Pink dropped out of the New Zealand Cup she will contest other races at Riccarton.

Nottaia,! '. whose name appeared among-the acceptors for the Cup and Oaks, has been sent home to Hastings; where she will be mated with All Black. The Maori King's stock have been a disappointment since Maori Mat, the first to race, won the Debutant Stakes. ♦■ ♦ *

J. O.'Shea passed through yesterday on his way South, and expects— «* to be riding at Riccarton. ...... .j, + + Of the New Zealand Cup candidates who have raced in this Island your correspondent likes best the chances of Teka and Paraoa. ::::::*' * * The ] Poverty Bay winner Ladogeur, was among the winners at Riccarton last spring. * * *

The stewards of the Wellington Racing Club will be well represented at Riccarton on Monday. Secretary A. E; Whyte will be unable to be present, being engaged on what is now known as the "no reply" tote-betting case.

Under a light-weight Galore, who is improving, might run out seven furlongs in the Linwood Handicap. Her stable mate, Lady Black, is expected to be at her best in the Stewards.' She was not long up when she raced at Masterton. C. Emerson won a double on her at Manawatu last autumn. * * *

Of the Welcome Stakes candidates seen out at Trentham, Finmark and Pontoon may prove to be the best.
