P NOTES. A meeting of fie Merchant Service Guild was held in Wellington on Monday to di.sCUSS matters concerning a scheme or compensation for masters and officers of the mercantile marine killed or injured through war risks. This scheme applies only to the men on boats not commandeered hy the Government. Later, the following resolution was carried unanimously:—"That application be made to the shipping companies asking them to form a compensation fund for the masters and otlicers of all vessels to cover war risks on the same lines as the British mercantile marine war risks Compensation scheme." Tonnage in the United States is still very i difficult to procure, and steamers are ' chartered at extremely high rates. It is anticipated that there will be a great shortage of freight room, and the outlook is for the continuance of a strong freight market with a possible further advance. The question or regulating both charter cot and ; freight rates by the United States Government has not yet been decided, anil so far there is no outlook for any easier freighting ' market. j
