AMERICAN MEAT TRUST.
SIR J, G. WARD'S DENIAL. ( i (From Our Own Parliamentary Reporter.] J, WELLINGTON, November 1. « The inference that Sir Joseph r Ward, through the firm of J. G. i Ward and Co., Ltd., was connected | with the American Meat Trust was i the subject of further discussion in c the House of Representatives this > morning. c Sir Joseph Ward read a telegram T front an Invevcargill firm of solici- f tors, representing Ward and Com- V pany, to the effect that the Ocean I Beach Works belonged exclusively \ to the Federal Steam Navigation c Company, to which the titles had 1 been transferred in 1903. Sir Joseph said that this evidence could have i been obtained by the committee if \ it had had tiie courtesy to ask for it. j. He regretted that Mr Pcarce should have been allowed to insinuate that 1 he had been personally interested in .1 the operations of Armour and Coy. \ Mr Nosworthy explained ihat Mr Pearce had based his remarks pure- t !y on the advertisements published t by Burt and Co., the agents in Aus- i tralia for Armour's. Sir Joseph Ward said that no re- l sporsibility could be placed on the head of any firm for any statements made by its advertisement writer. i Dr Newman (Wellington East) t and Mr Field (Otaki), both of whom ] were members of the comnn"ee, c told the House lhat the evidence £ heard wholly failed to show any i connection between J. G. Ward and i Co. and the Meat Trust. t Sir Joseph Ward thanked the ', members for their statement and the ( matter dropped. (
