M.Donald (Dunedin), ( "who have been visiting Wellington, ' eanie down to Christehureh l>y this , morning's boat, ainl will remain here . over the rae s. , Mrs (Papanui) intends giv- , ing a garden party towards the end of . the month, in aid of the garden stnll ] at the forthcoming Domain Fete. This ] stall,' it will be remembered, has been ; undertaken by the Victoria League , here. , Sister Marian Wilkie, daughter of , Mr and Mr* Wilkie, Waimate, who , ■was recently awarded the Royal Red < Cross, and who has also received a Xew ] Zealand hospital medal, was recently , married to Major Hargiot, a Xew Zea- ; lander on service in France. , A jumble sale was held in the Dur- ] ham Street Methodist Schoolroom yes- i terday, the proceeds being in aid of the ] Bed Cross Fund. The promoters had -■ received very liberal assistance in the j way of gifts, and the financial result ] of the sale was very satisfactory. , Mrs S. G. Raymond (Papanui) gave ; a very enjoyable, as well as profitable, i fpft afternoon yesterday, on behalf of j the Deaconesses' Home. A large quau-1: tity of useful gifts, and some £6 in ] money, was received. A musical pro- t gramme was contributed by Miss Kathleen Barclay, Mrs Fairhurst, Miss Lofua Sean and Miss Mona Cayley-Robinson. The guests included Mrs Carev Hill, Mrs William Wood, Mrs and Miss Ollixier, Mrs Wanklyn. Mrs and Miss Elworthv, Mrs P. B. Haggitt, Mrs Gosset, Mts f. W. Stringer. Mrs Pinekneyj Mrs ( Feilden, Mrs Hurst Seager, and Miss i Monica Cocks. t JMiss E. A. Clarke, hon. secretary and] official collector in Christehureh for the Mission to Lepers, arranged an "at < home" for the supporters of the fund « jesterday. It was held in the Y.M.C.A., < and combined a short business report ) of the workings of the fund. The Rev. < P. B. Haggitt presided over the gather- t img. He stressed the fact that £IOS had i been collected for the past year, an advance of £53 on the previous year's , collections. This, went direct to the l\ mission, no expenses being deducted. ( The Rev. J. Hay (Cust) described at i length the pitiful conditions of the i lepers, and the urgent necessity for;do- * ing whatever was possible to lighten J their terrible burden. At the conclu- t ■ion of the meeting the guests were entertained at afternoon tea.' J To-morrow afternoon the Hospital j Fete takes splace, and marry attractions are promised. Apart from this view- i point, however, it is the duty of the \ public to support the effort, which will be the first"Tiiade for some time on be- . half of the destitute patients. The j latter are indeed destitute —bereft of health as well as worldly goods —and ( none requires a helping hand more urg- , ently than they. All those more fortu- j ■ately-situated people should bear this in mind to-morrow, and should support . the fete by way of a thanksgiving of; \ fering for their happier circumstances. They will find much to interest and entertain them, and a couple of hours . ■pent in the beautiful grounds surrouftting the hospital, radiant in their spring freshness, should prove pleasurable to all. A special bridge over the river at the end of Cashel Street is being erected to facilitate entrance. Last evening a large number of parents and friends gathered in the Caledonian Rooms to witness an exhibition of dancing and fancy exercises by Miss Lowe's pupils. This annual event is always awaited with a great deal of' pleasurable interest, and last night was no exception to the rule. The exhibition opened with the time-honoured grand march, whi.-h was a very pretty sight, the participants being graded according to size, from the tiny tots to ' those who had almost reached young ladyhood. There was a rhythmically - executed exhibition of dumb-bell exer-l rises by the combined classes, who also gave various well-known ballroom! dances and a measure not so well known and designated a "Tennis Dame.'' The juvenile classes waltzed, barn-danced, and polka 'd, and three little pupils, Misses Enid Matson and A. and S. Musgrave, executed a "Fas de Trois" prettily. Miss Gibson's class danced a medley, and also a Spanish dance. with mu.-h dashing of castiaets and whirling of ribbons. The shawl dan.-e. by Miss Sanders's pupils , ami pupils of a private cla-s. was in-j deed graceful and charming. The gem I of the solo numbers was a tambourine! dance, by Miss Olive Rowe. Dressed| in yellow, with a b!a«-k velvet bolero,j scarlet sash, and little coin-circled cap! on her fair curls, she uplifted her be-; ribboned tambourine and danced with spirit and grace, and was rewarded with: a shower of coins for the Red Cro*s ; Fund. Miss Sybil Lamb's "Beggar's. Dance,*' given earlier in the evening,! also produced a profitable shower. Miss Enid Matson was another solo dancer, !

her contribution to the programme bc-l ing a Highland fling. At the conclusion | of the programme numbers the pupils j indulged in ordinary ballroom dancing, L and supper was subsequently served in , an adioining room. j , Lieu:.. 11.
