NAVY DAY.

A WELL-PLANNED EFFORT. Those in charge of Navy Day arrangements must have regarded the aspect of the weather as a good omen when they awakened this morning, the first really fine morning in a tearful week. The stalls which so change the appearance of the Square looked lo the best advantage in the bright, clear sunshine of the forenoon, each one being well | stocked with saleable goods, and garrisoned with capable sellers. In i front of the Cathedral was Mrs Algar [Williams's Japanese stall, replete with Japanese bric-a-brac, the stallholders being quite in the picture in their Japanese garb. A variety stall I was in charge of Mrs Mountfort and I Mrs Morton; flags, postcards and Royal Navy hat bauds were sold by ! Mesdames 11. J. Raphael and C. & j Dalgely; sweets by Miss Storry; proI ducc by Mrs Treleaven, and country | members, and flowers bv Mesdam.eS |H. Cotterill, Wynn-Wiiliams, and I Alfred Brown. Mrs T. A. B. Bailey j and Mrs F. N. Robinson bad a rather fascinating "white elephant" stall near Broadway's, to which people had donated articles that they no longer required, and which' had therefore become "white elephants." Articles of jewellery, china, glassware, etc., were collected and sold. At the Chamber of Commerce Major Batchelor was in charge, receiving the boxes, and taking the cash. Mrs Alfred Luttrell and a staff of helpers provided refreshments for the workers, and Mrs C. J. i Treleaven generally supervised I arrangements. Colonel Hobday and the Mayor, Mr H. Holland, were also .assisting in various ways. | A large staff of collectors was emi ployed in shifts commencing at about 8.30. They are selling representations of the "White Ensign," [which, by midday, was to be seen decorating the coat lapel, or the corsage, of almost everyone. A good harvest is anticipated, especially as there is already a good number of visitors in town, who, being on holiday bent, are expected to be in a generous mood.
