BURGLARS.
RICCARTON HOUSES ENTERED. A CUP TIME VISITATION. Burglars are busy in the Riccarton district. Some time ago Riccarton was subjected lo the unwelcome attentions of the sneak thief, and there appears lo be a recrudescence of the trouble now. Last evening five bouses were broken into, but it has not been ascertained whether any substantial ! hauls were made. Attention appears i to have been devoted particularly to i Lower Riccarton. Troubles of this kind are not new ito Christchurch at race lime. The "cracksmen" are apparently of the] j amateur type, who await the depar- \ lure of a family from home and then i proceed to ransack the premises. ; It is anticipated that one good, I effect of the prohibition of departurcs from Australia will be that there will be an absence at this I I year's Cup meeting of those gentle-j men known to Ibe police as ! "hooks," i.e., pick-pockets. Usually I this fraternity came from Sydney j about this time of the year, com-1 mencing operations at the' Cup meeting here and working north to conclude with ibe big meeting in Auckland.
