I The Right Rev. Monsignor McKonna, V.G., of Masterton, entered a private hospital on Monday to undergo an operation for an internal trouble. Mr W. H. Dempsey, who lately resigned the position of postmaster at Pahiatua, has completed forty-three ■ years' service in the Post and Telegraph Department. To Captain William Howard Johnson, of Wellington, has come the honour of attainment of his majority at the early age of 24. Major Johnson, who left with the sth Reinforcement as a first lieutenant in the 6th Howitzer Battery, saw service in Gallipoli, and later was transferred to the Western front; he was promoted from acting-captain to captain on the field in Flanders, and was awarded the Military Cross for assuming command of anil handling his battery with courage and determination, keeping his guns in action under heavy fire. Major Johnson was recently reported to be acting-major and officer in charge of the battery. He is the youngest sou of Captain H. Johnson, exharbourmaster at Wellington. He was, before enlisting, on the staff of .Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co., of Wellington.
