THE LATE MR LENNON.

To the Editor of THE SUN. Sir, —The friends and relatives of the late Mr Alfred Richard Lennon, of New Plymouth, will be very much pained when reading the evidence of Mr 0. S. Harper at the inquest held yesterday “that he had had occasion to reprimand him on account of his work not being entirely satisfactory.” Having known the late Mr Lennon for the past twelve years, I have no doubt that any unsatisfactory condition of his work w r as brought about by overstrain, and an ultra conscientious idea of what was expected from him. I believe that dur r ing the many years he has been in the service of his employers he has not had a single holiday even during his yearly visit to Christchurch for audit purposes; his time was always fully occupied with his work. I have often blamed him for not applying for leave—-his reply was, it is impossible. He did not even take tho usual Saturday half-holiday. I havo always found the late Mr Lennon a most conscientious upright man, and a cultivated gentleman. I hope you will insert these few lines to help in some measure to counteract the effect which Mr Harper’s remarks may have on his wife, his daughters., and his friends.— I am, etc., W. CAREY HILL.
