LATE MR D. RUTHERFORD.

FUNERAL AT WAIAU. The popularity of the late Mr Duncan Rutherford, and the general feeling of regret at his death, was shown by the large gathering which attended his funeral at Waiau yesterday. Both by car and by train, the city friends of the deceased, and the representatives of the various bodies with which he was connected travelled to the district to pay their last tribute of respect to Ids memory. At the request of the family, only the nearest relatives and closest friends had sent floral tributes—a car being covered with wreaths. Flowers were also received from the patients and staff of the Queen Mary Hospital, and Waiau Presbyterian Church, and the employees of the estate. Over fifty cars followed the funeral cortege, which started from the Leslie Hills homestead, where Mr Rutherford had lived for fifty-one years, at 1 p.m. The procession was considerably added to on the route, whilst it was met at Waiau by a large number of the residents. The burial service was conducted by the aged Rev. W. TL Campbell, an old friend of the family, who bad officiated for many '. ears as Presbyterian minister of the Hanmer and Waiau districts, and also by the Rev. J. H. Thompson, the present minister at Waiau. In a brief address before' the coffin was lowered into the grave. Mr Thompson spoke of (be many estimable qualifies of Mr Rutherford, and referred to bis acii’dtics in looking after returned soldiers. W. Robin; and Lienhnanl-Coionel McGibbon represented the DirectorGeneral of Medical Services. General Henderson. Reference to the loss sustained in the death of Mr Rutherford was made last evening at the fortnightly gathering of the Canterbury Cate- 1 (lonian Society by the president, Mr C. S. Thomas. A lament was played by Pipers Erskinc and Taylor, those present standing. At the Amur! saleyards on Tuesday, Air B. Hampton, chairman of the Saleyards Company, made reference to Air Rutherford’s death, and paid a tribute to his many inestimable qualities. Air A. Smith also spoke on behalf of the auctioneers. As a mark of respect, the sale was postponed for ten minutes. Before proceeding with the business of the Canterbury Automobile Association last evening, the chairman (Air A. S. Clarkson) referred to the loss the Association had sustained in the death of the late Air Duncan Rutherford. He had been a member of the Association since its inception, and had done a large amount of valuable work for it and motorists generally. He moved that a letter of condolence be sent to the widow and family of the deceased gentleman. This was carried in silence, all standing. At a meeting of the AVairewa Comity Council on Tuesday a vote of condolence was passed with the wife and family of the late Mr Duncan Rutherford on the toss sustained. A copy of the resolution to be forwarded to Mrs Rutherford and- the Ainuri County Council.
