FIRE BOARD.

e MONTHLY MEETING. The Christchurch Fire Board metlast evening, there being present: The; Mayor, Mr H. Holland (chairman), and j Messrs .1. F. Gricrsbn, A. Williams, F. Purgoyne, 11. R. Rusbridge, A. P. Hopkins, and G. Kerruish. The superintendent reported that five calls had been received since dune 16. Two move permanent staff men had! been called up in the ninth ballot, inak- j ing a total of 32 men who had either! enlisted or resigned from the brigade I in order to join the reinforcements. In j addition two others had been rejected.] The brigade at present was chiefly staffed by married men, with a few single men returned from the front. In view of the Second Division being called: at an early date, it would be necessary | for the board to consider the matter, so! as to safeguard iho interests of the city . and the efficiency of the brigade a.s a I whole. The boilers on two of the I steamers had been re-riveted.—The re-1 port was adopted. The financial statemenl showed thai; the receipts had been £1967 7/."., and the expenditure £1 sJti 1 6/6. Accounts* amounting to £Bl7 14/8 had been paid, while accounts amounting to £lB6 le>/2 were recommended for payment.—The statemenl was adopted. The board went into committee to discuss certain tenders, and on resum- | ing the chairman reported that it had I been decided to leave the matter of heating the men's quarters in the hands' of the executive, with power to act, and thai it had been also decide.! (o accept the tender of Mr W. Palmer for certain asphalting work. A letter was received from the United Fire Brigades' Association ask ing that the board should recommend] to the Efficiency Board thai lire brigade work be classified as an essential Indus-, tty, and that exempt ion lie granted to Second Division men.—The letter w.as referred to the F.xecutive Committee. Messrs J. F. Gricrson and A. Williams were appointed to examine the Board's accounts before they came up before the board.
