PERMISSION REFUSED.

PICTURE SHOWS AND GOOD FRIDAY. At the last evening's meeting of the Christchurch City Council, a letter was received from New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd., making application for permission to give picture entertainments at' His Majesty's Theatre on Good Friday, April 6. The letter added that humorous subjects would be eliminated, and only subjects suitable to the occasion would form the programme. A similar application was received from the Manager of the Globe Picture Theatre. Cr. J- R. Hayward moved that permission be refused. The sort of stuff that the picture people were giving Christchurch at present, he said, was certainly not to their credit. That, at any rate, was the opinion of a large section of the community. The censorship of films did not seem to be altogether a success. He also considered that the employees of the picture shows should be able to have a holiday on Good Friday. Cr. H. ,1. Otley, who seconded the motion, said that there seemed to be absolute greed on the part of the picture proprietaries. Pictures were a thing that should be cut out on Good Friday. There was far too mueh amusement in these days when there should be economy. The motion was carried.
