OFF TO CAMP.

THE TWENTY-FOURTHS. BALLOTED MEN INCLUDED.

; Christchurch has soon many reinj forcemenl drafts leave for the trainl ing camps, so many, in fact, thai save for those immediately intcrcstj or!—wives, sweethearts, mothers, re- ' lalivcs, and friends—their deparI lure has been accepted in a matter- ! of-fact—almost indifferent—spirit. I But last evening, the parade in Hie 1 King Edward Barracks of the North : Canterbury and Christchurch quotas i of the 21th Reinforcement, possessed ; characteristics distinct from those drafts which had preceded thorn, for, | in addition to those who had voluni leered to assist in the struggle ovcr--1 seas, there wore men there who had i been pressed into service by the ; marble of the ballot box, or who, un- ; der Section 35 of the Act, had given |no .satisfactory reason explaining j why, as members of families unre- '■ presented in the Dominion armies, j they should not themselves carry a rifle in the great struggle. Thai was i the position last evening—a state of ! affairs which could reasonably have i boon expected to have created widespread interest. Yet, as a result of | the matter-of-fact manner in which New Zeahmders as a whole have adopted the now order of things, there were few curious onlookersfriends and relatives of course were there as of yore. There also was no demonstration, nothing on the surface to show that the men who chatted quietly were shortly to face the hell of screaming and roaring shells, the menacing discord of bursting bombs: the hiss and wail of tearing bullets, perhaps even the quick gleam of sullen steel. And the men. They stood beside their bundles of belongings—kitbags, paper-bags, or perhaps a leather grip—talking quietly. One missed the merriment, the careless jest l and the boisterous fun distinguish- j ing their predecessors in khaki. They were a sober crowd in their de-1 meanour—in the literal sense too;j there was no drunkenness—as perbaps best befitting men who realised | that their manhood was to be tested j in the supreme and greatest crucible of all. SPORTSMEN ALL. Some were not there of their own choice; to many possibly the spur) which made the decision had proved welcome, but whether anxious or indifferent, all showed themselves sportsmen. They were good-hu-moured—the die was casl—and they would see it through! That was the impression conveyed last evening—a matter-of-fact, good-humour-! cd collection of sportsmen. It can be honestly said, too, that in physique there was no deterioration in quality. The men were of a likely stamp, particularly those from the North Canterbury district. THE RESPONSE. The city quota was 159 men strong. I Of this number 115 wore for the infantry, while five infantrymen | failed to attend. The full number of I infantry required was 189, but ow-j ing to the extraordinarily large mini-! her of medical rejections, only the number nvntiufied was immediately available. Of the North Canterbury j draft, (SO men wore notified to parade. Although all required did not i answer their names, it is understood j that arrangements had been entered into for them to join up en route, j The city draft was in charge of Lieutenants Livingstone and Brown and Sergeant-Maior Rich. Sergeant-! Major If. F. Phillips and Q.M.S. R. Simpson were in charge of the North Canterbury draft. THE OFFICIAL PROCEEDINGS, i After the customary inspection by I the officer commanding the district I (Colonel R. A. Chaffey, V.D.), the men were addressed a few words of j farewell and advice by this officer.

Colonel Chaffey briefly congratulated the men on their appearance, anil said thai lie was pleased that the draffs were quite up to the standard which Canterbury bad set in the past. Many, no doubt, had made sacrifices before they could get away, and he was sure therefore that no diminution in spirit existed. As regards the men who were not volunteers, and those who were, no difference existed now—they were all soldiers. Colonel Chaffey concluded with a reminder on the necessity for Setting fit and for placing duty before all things. A command rang out, belongings were shouldered, a "right turn!" and headed by the C.Y.C. band, the contingent swung out on the march (o the Railway Station—lo whatever the future had in store! THE LIST. The following are the lists of those who were notified to attend:— CHRISTCHURCH AREA.
