CRICKET.

THE DISTRICT MATCHES.

FOURTH SERIES FINISHED. The fourth series of matches in the Canterbury Cricket Association's competitions finished to-day in fine, bright weather, but with a strong north-east wind blowing. RICCARTON v. SYDENHAM. At the end of the first day's play Sydenham had scored 70 for four wickets in replying to Riccarton's score of 307 at Hagley Park. J. Gray and W. Robson resumed this afternoon to the bowling of L. Davison and M. O. Sinclair, who were assisted by the breeze. Gray added only four runs to his first day's score of 30, and wickets fell steadily, until eight were down for 416. By that time, however, S. Hincksman, batting freely, was improving the position, and by the time his wicket, the last, was secured the total had reached 152, to which he had contributed 52. Sydenham had to follow on. Sydenham's second innings was a better performance. W. R. Patrick and E. N. Goring set a good example by putting on 98 for the second wicket, and Patrick and Gray put on 54 for the third wicket. Then, however, a couple of wickets fell cheaply. At 5.45 p.m. the scores were:— RICCARTON. First innings 307 SYDENHAM. First Innings. W. Patrick c North b Nixon .. .. t W. H.
