LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

SLOT TELEPHONES. To Ih. Editor .f THE SUN. Sir, —I had occasion to use the slot telephone at the railway station this morning. I rang up and asked for a certain number and was informed it was engaged and my penny was returned. After in interval of three or four minutes I again rang, and they were still engaged, was cut off, rind no penny returned. After another few minutes I rang again, still engaged, cut off, no penny returned after demanding same. Now the transaction cost me 2d, and I got nothing in return, and very little attention or courtesy.

This is not the only occasion I have been treated in a similar manner when having to use these public conveniences. Sometimes one may ring up and no doubt get connected through, and there the matter seems to end as far as the exchange is concerned. They do not trouble to inquire if the connection was the correct one, and so it costs another penny and loss of time. I must say that there are general complaints of the treatment received by the users of these machines. A busy man has really no time to be bothered with them, and has not always got three or four coppers in his pocket when one should be sufficient.—l am, etc., W. M. G. RETURNED SOLDIERS' ASSOCIATION. To the Editor of THE SUN. Sir, —I should like to refer to two points in connection with your report of last night's meet'ng. I mentioned a lack of frankness on the part of the C.D.C., and a discourteous attitude in regard to our efTorts to effect a basis of agreement. The word "incivility" was a verbal slip which I subsequently corrected. , In regard to the use of premises I by non-menibers. the association obi jects to the fact that under the proposal of the C.D.C., members of the association are paying their association subscription of 10/- while non- ' members pay 5/-. This will react to the detriment of the association, through which alone a club of this kind can be thoroughly effective. Your report did not make our position clear on that point.—l am, etc., DOUGLAS SEYMOUR. R.S.A., Ghristchurch, December '22 nd.
