OPAWA SCHOOL.

ROLL OF HONOUR UNVEILED. A roll of honour, bearing the names of ex-students who have j fought upon the field of battle, was unveiled at the Opawa School this afternoon. Mr R. H. Turner (chairman of the school committee) presided. Among those present were:— Mr J. Jamicson (representing the! North Canterbury Board of Educa- \ lion) Mr C. Flavell (chairman of the j Heathcote Countv Council), and Mr G. Scott. Mr Turner paid a tribute to the memory of the brave lads who had fought, and some of whom have died,! in defence of their country and their j Empire. He particularly mentioned Colonel Charters and Major Hurst, j who had rendered distinguished service, but he would ask them to re- j member that many others who had also served their country well had never had that service recognised; but all had been an honour to their country. Mr Jamieson then unveiled the memorial, and expressed regret that, j upon the board were the names of j some who had made the supreme sacrifice. To the relatives of those brave lads, some of whom were present, their hearts went out in respect and sympathy. Mr Lane, Secretary of the Educa- ; tion Board, and Mr Colee (head! master of the school) also delivered: short addresses. Mr Colee saying that in the days to come the roll of honour would be the centre piece of the history lessons.
