The It.M.S. Ruahine, wh'eh arrived at Auckland on Thursday afternoon from Liverpool, via the Panama Canal, will leave for Wellington tonight.

The Moeraki is en route to Wellington from Sydney, bringing 23 saloon and 81 steerage passengers, including 13 Chinese. She has on board 1235 tons of cargo and is due at Wellington on Monday. The last steamer to leave Wellington lor San Francisco took the following passengers:—First Saloon: Misses Dallcn and Beid, Mr G. P. Deas. Some anxiety is being experience*! in loj'ul shipping circles (suys (lie Auckland "Herald") at tlic non-arrival of the schooner Andy Mahony, which is now 109 days out from San Francisco to Auckland. The vessel left the American port on August 21>, carrying a hold cargo of 0050 cases of oil and a deck cargo of ;!2(i,!»:iKl'l of lumber for Hie Dominion. Since the vessel's departure, no steamer has reported having spoken her, nor has she been reported Irani any point. Referring to the mailer local shipping authorities commented on the vessel's protracted voyage and compared it with that of the previous longest trip made by a similar vessel from San I'raiinsco to this port. I'l'is was the KcMias passage or 70 days. Other long voyages were made by the M. Turner and the 11. M. Smith, both of which took over 711 days. Two vessels, the American barque (iolden (late, and tile sailer Louisa Craig, both of which left Sau Francisco about (he same time as the Andy Mahony lor New Zealand ports, arrived at their destinations after passages of I!) and 53 days respectively. These vessels are, however, probably the fastest sailing ships visiting the Dominion. While admitting that (here was grave cause for anxiety as to the Andy Mahonv's nonappearance, one local authority said il was quite possible that the vessel' would showup safely, and pointed out that it was probable that it had met with a succession of calms coming through tin' Doldrums. As au instance of this, he quoted the voy- .109

ages, some years ago, of the barques Wynchwood and CrilTel from Monte Video to Newcastle, Australia. These vessels, similarly rigged, and both in ballast, left Monte Video about the same time, the CrilTel reaching her destination in 4(5 days, while the Wyehwood took 82 days.

MELBOURNE-NEW ZEALAND SERVICE. It is reported that the Paloona will re-enter the Melbournc-Hlulf-lHuiedm-Lyttelton -Wellington service early in the New Year. The vessel was withdrawn from the service about a fortnight ago on account of the coal strike in Australia, and is at present undergoing overhaul at Port Chalmers, which will lake another two weeks to complete. She is to leave Dunedin on January 3 for Lyttelton and Wellington, and sails from Wellington for Melbourne.

Huddart-Parker and Company have cabled to their Melbourne ollice asking whether there is any possibility of the Wimmera, which is now held up in Melbourne, being recommissioned shortly in order to re-enter her usual service. Till- INCREASE IN FREIGHT RATES. Freight rates on nil cargo from Australia have been increased, but for once it can be said few complaints have been heard (says the "Sydney Shipping List"). That some would complain was to be expected, indeed, if any advance was decided upon and no person felt called upon to express indignation it would have been an extraordinary state of affairs, and past the comprehension of shipping men entirely; but as it is it would seem that at last it has become general knoweldgc that in maritime affairs there is some difference between gross earnings and actual profit on a vessel's voyage. Jt is not the contention that the shipping companies have been maintaining services at a loss, as a matter of fact the balance sheets of all shipping companies have revealed some profit, but the profits have not been so large as many appear under the impression to believe to be the case, or even in proportion to the extra risks and costs the \ ar has entailed. Wages have increased, insurance rates have increased, cost of materials has advanced, provisioning expenditure is greater, in fact there is not one item utilised on board or in connection with the merchant ship of to-day that does not cost more, and in passing on a share of the additional expenditure shipping companies engaged in the Australian oversea trade have done exactly the same as has been done elsewhere. At first 3.} d and 2}d per lb on wool, and a jump of about one-third on general merchandise may indicate the advance to be excessive, but if everything is given full consideration ii is by no means so, indeed the demand is very nominal. That perhaps is the reason why so few complaints on the subject have been hcaid.
