The Superintendent of Mercantile Marine :it Lyttelton has received the following wire from Mr Geo. Allport:—"Advise vessels that Captain Smith* of the Hurunui, from Timaru, reports passing this morning, outside Wellington Heads, a large floating tree."

The Waikari School Committee met on Monday evening. It was decided to apply to the Board of Education for a new well and windmill. For the School Queen election in connection with the Hawarden Show, Gladys Scott has been nominated as the Waikari candidate.

A meeting of the South Island Band Association was held on Friday to discuss, the, advisability of holding a Bandsman's' Day in Oliristehurcli. Mr S. A. Staples presided over a good attendance, including delegates from the Woolston, Lvttelton Marine, Tramways, G.T.C., and 'New "Brighton Bands. It was decided to make the necessary arrangements for holding the function on Saturday, January 20, 1917, and to donate the proceeds to tlie local Red Cross Society. The chairman'and the secretary (Mr T. F. Hall) were appointed' to arrange matters regarding collectors and badges.
