TURF TOPICS.

Maniaroa showed a return to his' best form in the Woodville Handicap, yesterday, but the honours of the, race rested with Chortle. The hit-: ter's display under 9.13 was lull of; merit, and is bound to bring him into prominence for the Auckland Cup.

The Kain m u-t ruined Hymeslra, who put ui) such a line showing in the Electric Plate at Riccarton last month, showed to advantage in the Maiden Plate at Woodville yesterday. He was followed home hy Form Up, a Ilawke's Bay-owned daughter of Formative and Pursering. No horse in the Dominion has raced more consistently this season than has Sungod. Out of his last 12 starts he has been placed on nine occasions, and by his fine achievement in the Forbury Cup has qualified for a nomination in the Champion Stakes and New Zealand Trotting Cup. The executive of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club should be well pleased with the support forthcoming for its Summer Meeting. Despite the fact of a general tightening up of the classes splendid fields figure in every race, and a better collection of horses has never been got together for a two-days fixture. Fifteen claim engagement in the Champion Handicap, and it only needs such as Our Thorpe, Admiral Wood, Cathedral Chimes, Sungod, Emilias, and Moneymaker to face the starter to ensure a spirited contest. The slow class races have filled particularly well, especially the Second Amateur Handicap, which has attracted the record list of 49 harness horses.

The handieappcr to the Auckland Trotting Club appears to have taken an extraordinary liberty with Lady Haldane in the Auckland Cup by placing her on the limit in that event. Last June, when handicapped at 4.41 in the Plumpton Handicap at Canterbury Park, the daughter of Lord Chancellor made an exhibition of her field, though the slow nature of the track, and the manner in which the race was run, was all against fast time recording. Subsequently she has been handicapped at 4.38 and 4.39 by Canterbury handicappers, at which marks she was by no means badly treated. Despite this she is now placed on the limit in a 4.43 race, and it will surely take something pretty good to lower her colours. Under the circumstances it is doubtful if many of the other Canterbury horses engaged will pay up in the Auckland race against her. Owners are given a final reminder that acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club's Summer Meeting close at noon to-morrow.

Lady Rothsoon, who won the principal event at the Winton Trotting Club's meeting yesterday, is a five-year-old daughter of Harold Rothschild and Too Soon. The latter is a half-sister to the New Zealand Trotting Cup winner Win Soon. Sir Gavin showed greatly improved form at the Winton Trotting Club's meeting yesterday. After acting as runner-up to Lady Rothsoon in the big harness event Sir Hector's son turned the tables on Pringle's mount in the Gallipoli Handicap, gelting to the end of the 12 furlongs in 3min 39 l-ssec.

When contesting the Members' Handicap at the Winton Trotting Club's meeting yesterday Queen's Lane fell, two furlongs from home. Fortunately neither the mare nor hej; driver (A. Pringle) were much the worse for the mishap. The Otago mentor, J. Jameson, was in great form at the Winton Trotting Club's meeting yesterday, three of the events coming his way through the agency of Hcctoroo, Tika, and Lady Margaret. There was a slight increase in the totalisator receipts at the Winton Trolling Club's meeting yesterday, due to the improved attendance. Entries for the Ashburton Trotting Club's Summer Meeting close with Mr A. A. Looks to-morrow evening. Crib's owner intends giving the Sant llario gelding a chance to earn distinction over country next season. Sue!) a sale conveyance and great slayer should be quite at home in cross-country contests. A Gisborne paper reports that Mr A. B. Williams, owner of Chortle and several oilier horses, has been called to the colours. The Trentham men lor J. Lowe intends taking a team to the Auckland meeting which will include Chakwana, Seadown, Menelaus and Ayah.

Desert Gold is now being trained at Woodville with the other members of F. Davis's team. The champion has quite thrown off the effects of the mishap she sustained at Riccarlon, and is reported to be galloping with all her former brilliancy.

Rose Pink was allowed to forfeit her engagements at the Woodville meeting, and she will make her next appearance at Awapuni on Boxing Day.

R. Wool ton, who already has a number of English-bred horses in Australia, purposes sending out the live-year-old Que Sera (Dark Ronald —Broom), whose last win was in the Bretby Welter Handicap, at Newmarket last month. Thirteen winners of 19 races, totalling £12,430 was Mr E. Million's record up to October lfi. As announced by cable, he finished first in Ibis year's winning owners' list in England.

The added money for the next Doncaster Handicap has been reduced from £2OOO to £l-500, and for the Svdnev Cup from £SOOO to £IOOO. The amotSfcls for the Challenge Slakes and Anniversary Handicap remain al £750 and £IOOO respectively.

.Mr Somerville Taltersnll rescued Sceptre from the foreigners when giving TOOOgs. for her, and it is pleasing lo be able al lasl lo record a victory for one of her progeny. This came with Crosvenor's easy win in the Great Foal Stakes, when her son by Cicero triumphed over his stable companion, Esconib, and Articling. Last October the historic race for Hie Newmarket Town Plate was run over the Newmarket July Course for the 251.5 i time, when C. W. Stevens walked over on Basil Jarvis' Kingswood. The articles regarding the race were drawn up by order of Charles 11. in IGGG, who directed Unit the race be run at noon on the second Thursday in October for ever. The course is four miles out and home;

"Vigilant" mentions that the October edition of the Bloodstock Breeders' Review contains an interesting contribution by Dr H. E. Piatt on "Unbeaten Racehorses." As far as horses that run on the British Turf are concerned, Dr. Piatt's researches have resulted in a list of 14 unbeaten horses of note. They are Eclipse, Middleton, Bay Middleton, Amato, Crucifix, Hero, Kincsem, Barcaldinc, St. Simon, Ormonde, Suspender, Quintessence, Cherimoya, and The Tetrarch. To this list, which was no doubt compiled before the race for the September Stakes, may per.haps have to be added the name of Mr Buchanan's good colt, Hurry On, when his racing career is ended. Three of Dr Piatt's unbeaten lot only ran once, Middleton and Amato when they won the Derby, and Cherimoya when she won the Oaks. They could not, however, do more than win. Eclipse, on the other hand, had no fewer than 20 victories to his credit, although half of them were walks-over. Kincsem is included in the list by reason of her Goodwood Cup victory in 1878. Her record makes that of Eclipse look small, for she won no fewer than 57 races, according to the well-known trainer, Joe Butters. Dr. Piatt recalls much of interest concerning the careers of .'}(. Simon, Ormonde, and Suspender. As to The Tetrarch, so much has been written from time to time about the "spotted" son of Roi Herode and his racecourse career ended so recently, that nothing is given about him except a list of his victories.
